Public transport
Taxis
- Check that it is a Taxi you are getting into and not just a car
- If you cannot hail a licensed taxi, carry the number of a reputable firm
- Wherever possible book by phone
- If possible, travel with a friend
- Always sit in the back of the taxi
- If you chat with the driver don't give away any personal details
- If you feel uneasy, ask the driver to pull up
- Before arrival at your destination have your cash ready, leave the cab then pay the driver
- Have your keys ready and enter your home quickly
- If you are the last drop, call a friend when you get in
Buses
- When waiting at a bus stop after dark, stand in a well lit place or near groups of people
- On an empty bus or late at night, sit near the driver
- Know where you are going and which stop you need
- Arrange for someone to meet you at your designated stop
- When getting of a bus at night or in an unfamiliar area, attach yourself to a group of people and walk purposefully to your destination
- If other passengers make you feel uneasy, move to another seat
Trains
- Avoid travelling in compartments with no access to corridors or other parts of the train
- Sit with other people
- If you feel threatened or there is an incident, act immediately
- Alert the guard or conductor
- Pull the communication cord
- Set off the alarm
- Look for staff or a help point
