Before you set Off

  • Make sure your car is in good working order:-
    • Serviced regularly
    • Check oil and water
    • Check tyre pressure & tread
    • Check you have sufficient fuel for journey
  • If possible, join a national breakdown service
  • Plan your route in advance
  • Tell people your destination and expected time of arrival
  • Always carry change or a phone card in case of emergencies

On The Road

  • Keep an up to date map handy, so that you do not have to stop and ask for directions
  • Keep the doors and windows locked - especially in go/stop traffic
  • Keep bags, mobile phones, valuables out of sight - these are easy pickings for a thief at traffic lights or whilst in a traffic jam
  • Do Not pick up hitch-hikers
  • If you see an accident etc. Think
    • Is it genuine?
    • Can I help?
    • Is it safe to get out?
    • Assess the situation, drive past the incident and use a mobile phone to report the accident
  • If you think you are being followed:-
    • Do Not drive home
    • Drive to a police station, garage or to a busy place

Parking Your Car

  • Always lock your car, put anything valuable in the boot
  • Lock your car, even if you are paying for petrol
  • Park in a well lit area, as close to your destination as possible
  • Always reverse into a parking space, ready for a quick exit
  • In a multi-story car park
    • Reverse in to a parking space
    • Park as near to ground level as possible
    • If possible, park away from any pillars
  • Have your car keys ready when you return to your car
  • Check the back seat for intruders, before getting in
